Sara's Helicopter Ride
High Risk Moms and Babies
Sara Ruhman, 27, had her first helicopter ride when she was medically airlifted to Saint Elizabeth from North Platte. It was one very nervous airborne hour for her. She was pregnant and having contractions—only two minutes apart---but her baby wasn’t due for more than two months yet.
The Saint Elizabeth transport team was ready to care for her in the helicopter and ready even if he baby were born then and there.
After an ultrasound and medications at Saint Elizabeth in the unit for High Risk Moms and Babies, the contractions slowed, then stopped. But she’d have to spend a few days at Saint Elizabeth to be sure they’d stop completely. Or, she may be a “guest” a while longer---staying there until her baby is born---due in mid-January.
“We’ll do whatever it takes for her baby,” said her husband Nick.
Sara misses her two-and-a-half-year old son back home in Cozad, but they stay in touch via telephone. Nick has a laptop and with free Wi-Fi, he easily keeps him in touch with relatives and work. If Sara has to stay longer, she has relatives in Omaha and Lincoln so she will have family near.
With a break in the weather Sara could take one of her approved twice-a-day wheelchair rides by going outdoors, riding around the lake.
